An Open Letter to Dr. Steve

I got a note from a listener about his mom and her nightmarish foray into the medical system.  She had a mass that was removed and post surgery retained a lot of fluid (it’s called “third spacing“, feel free to Google it). Anyway, she was getting a bit of the ol’ “run around”, likely due to being told different things by different practitioners on her case (and there were many).  Anyway, I gave her and her son some information and support and moved on.   A week later I got this letter.  Sometimes we don’t know the impact we’re having on people.

I post this here only as a reminder to my employer that despite all the F-bombs and awful dick jokes and testicle-cheese questions, we actually sometimes do some good on this show.

An open letter to Dr. Steve,

It is with a very grateful heart that I write to thank you for all of your help. You have been a shining beacon throughout this entire process. Your insights, your knowledge, but mostly importantly your dedication to helping others has helped us all so very much. Thank you for helping my son, Benjamin, in the process of helping me.

Among the many lessons, gifts so to speak, in this journey has been: to try to discern truth, to take responsibility for one’s own treatment, to stand up for oneself, to be articulate and to question. It became evident near the end of my ordeal that to express compassion rather than condemnation and to give of oneself to others who struggle was an important stop on this trip. A smile and a laugh go a long way on a cancer floor of women battling to live. The number one lesson that I see is to let your light shine, share your gifts, give a hug, provide a laugh. Do it every moment of every day. Tell the truth as you see it. Listen for truth in all that you hear. Value your friends and family beyond anything that you can imagine. Appreciate every moment and always move forward.

Today came the good news that all of the biopsies were benign. But I was very sick last week, and we could have permanently damaged my kidneys, When asked about this, my surgeon today told me that nothing different could have been done. I knew that was not true. When he said that he was the doctor, how dare I question his judgement, I did not rise to the argument. I left that room at peace. I had spoken my truth, and I would live when others would not.

So there we are. The trip that started with lower abdominal pain late last winter is finally over. In the process, we have gotten to know you, Dr. Steve, and your wonderful work. This trip into the world of high-tech surgery and world-class hospitals was over. We will wait for the new one to begin. Perhaps it will be to the little town of Gallatin, Tennessee, to see one incredible man: Dr. Steve.

With fond best wishes and our forever thanks,

Anne M

Weird Medicine Behind the Scenes Live show

After we did the 30 minute podcast, the Ustream listeners wanted to get involved so we experimented with taking some LIVE calls. It actually went better than I thought and we talked about gout and some other stuff and even got a call from Lady Trucker (who stumped us).

WE WILL GET BETTER AT THIS. The technology for taking live calls and streaming live isn’t new, but it’s new to us. We had a blast interacting with our friends online, though, and will do a lot more of this as time goes on.

So glitches and all, this is the first Live Weird Medicine from the Weird Medicine studios in downtown weirdmedicineville.

New Shows, New Addendum, Medical Mythbusters, other crap

It’s been a long time since I posted a Weird Medicine Addendum. For awhile, we were recording them before the XM/Sirius shows and we were finding that a lot of energy that went into the addendum took away from the “official” show. So we just quit doing them for awhile. We had so much fun recording the last two Weird Medicine shows that we had a lot of energy left to do more so we sat back down and did this addendum. There is all-new material here…none of it (that I recall) was done on the shows that aired.

Please welcome our new friend, Liquorstore Chad, who discussed Adult Nursing Relationships and Adult Breast Feeding on the XM show that will air June 12, 2010. He used to have a music business, where he went by the name “DJ ChadCo” so you know he has to be good.

Very exciting news is coming regarding the Midnight weekend slot…all I can tell you is there will be no more replays at Midnight unless it’s a holiday, and maybe not even then. Stay tuned.

your pal,

Dr Steve

New Weird Medicine Shows March 20, 27, 2010

Check out the Weird Medicine Addendum, powered by Arrogant Bastard Ale.

Ok, we gotta stop drinking while we’re doing the show.  Jefferson the Lawyer gave some really BAD medical advice, PA John gave some really BAD legal advice, Double Vasectomy Todd gave us all a BAD virus being cooped up in the studio with him, and I got totally flustered when John and Jeff started laughing hysterically off mic at some private joke.  Then I apparently posted this to our RSS feed and don’t even remember doing it. 🙂

Topics over the next few weeks include:

1) Breast Milk Flan
2) Assorted rectal bleeding questions
3) Assorted “My X smells like Y” questions
4) Herpes, herpes, herpes
5) Listen to PA John, DRUNK ON ONE BEER

We’re giving away some Weird Medicine merchandise!  Listen to the XM/Sirius shows for details!  Be the first to answer the stumper and a Weird Medicine beer stein is yours.

your pal,

Dr Steve

Weird Medicine Addendum 1/26/10

The guy who injected silicone into his penis is the subject (among other things) of this “Weird Medicine Addendum”.  If you haven’t seen the video, don’t miss it.  It’s not only “Not Safe For Work”, it’s not safe for anything.  This guy is a nut, but he’s happy, so who are we to criticize him? 20 lbs of silicone later, his glans looks like a giant bullfrog’s mouth and he can’t sit on the pot without dipping his junk into the water.   Fantastic then.

Don’t forget the Weird Medicine Merchandise Mart, where you can get that “I heart rimjobs” tee shirt for your dog that you’ve always wanted.

We recorded 2 new shows for air this weekend and next;  we covered a lot of ground and I think the shows are strong.  Follow @todd1017 during showtime 12MN Eastern on Twitter for updates and free merchandise!

Dr Steve

Weekly H1N1 Update for XM202 and Sirius 197 Listeners

Generally, what’s going on in Asia and the Southern Hemisphere during our summer (remember, it’s their winter) reflects what we’ll see during the winter here. So far, the H1N1 virus shows no signs of mutating into some bizarre “superflu” that the media continues to warn us against. I will repeat this again, no one can predict what this virus will do. It may continue to be a rather mild influenza virus (that still kills a significant number of people worldwide every year), or it could change and become a real problem. Influenza can kiss my ass. As soon as the vaccine is available, go get your shots. The more people that are immunized, the less likely this stupid virus is to spread. We don’t have to immunize EVERYONE to get the desired effect (though that would be ideal). If you can just immunize “most everyone”, the virus will have a hard time spreading throughout the population. It looks like vaccine will be available the middle of this month (September 2009).

Here are some facts from the CDC:

This situation report provides an update to the international situation as of August 28, 2009. As of August 23, the World Health Organization (WHO) regions have reported over 209,438 laboratory-confirmed cases of 2009 H1N1 influenza virus with at least 2,185 deaths. The laboratory-confirmed cases represent a substantial underestimation of total cases in the world as many countries focus surveillance and laboratory testing only in persons with severe illness. The 2009 H1N1 influenza virus continues to be the dominant influenza virus in circulation in the world. Decreases in disease due to 2009 H1N1 continue to be reported from South America and parts of Australia. The United Kingdom is also reporting national decreases in disease due to 2009 H1N1. In contrast, disease associated with 2009 H1N1 influenza is continuing to increase in southern Africa, and more African countries have reported their first cases. In addition, 2009 H1N1 continues to circulate in tropical countries.

So the mortality rate is 2185 deaths for 209438 cases, which translates to approximately 1 death per 100 cases. The death rate is therefore 0.0104.

If you have a fever, muscle aches, cough, headache, malaise…go see your health care provider. This virus is still sensitive to standard antiviral therapy (don’t tell it!) but you have to catch it in the first 48 hours to do any good.

Good luck! I’ll keep you in the loop best I can.

your pal,

Steve

PS: don’t miss “Weird Medicine”, 9-12MN EDST (6-9 Pacific) on Saturday, Sept 12th, 2009. This is an ALL NEW show, our “Fecalicious Turdastic Extravaganza” show, and it was pretty good. Check it out on Xm 202 or Sirius 197.

July 4th Dead Celebrity Special 2009

We asked for airtime to discuss medical problems that are related to the current crop of dead celebrities, including Michael Jackson (why do doctors treat celebrities differently than “normal” patients?), Billy Mays (how to avoid sudden cardiac death), and Farrah Fawcett (diagnosis and treatment of rectal cancer). I really, really tried to use these peoples’ demise as a jumping off point to discuss something relevant or interesting to our audience. Everyone else has done the tribute/bashing/whatever; I wanted to do something a little different.  We tried “turning the senseless deaths of famous people into information you can use to try to live forever.”

Thanks to sam and dave for giving up their airtime over the holiday weekend. They’re purty good fellers.

Thanks to mj@musclesorority.com for getting three of us on her program. Double Vasectomy Todd has regained almost 2 inches of lost manhood on her program. If you’re interested in talking to her, she’s very reasonable cost-wise, and really knows her stuff.

We are working hard toward a live show Oct 17th from NYC, and possibly another live show Labor Day weekend from Nashville.  Stay tuned.

your pal,

Steve

PS: Check out the WEIRD MEDICINE STORE!  This is new and all proceeds will go to keeping Live shows on the air.

April 4, 2009 Weird Medicine

This entry includes perianal depilitation, e-cigarettes, frottage, fluorescent urine, and prostatic congestion AKA “Blue Balls”.   Oh, and we exposed the condition known as “Cello Scrotum” as a hoax, and discussed male preference for areola size.   All in all, a busy show.

For those who are interested, we continue our coverage of the Canadian Healthcare system through the trials and tribulations of our friend “Lana from Canada” who is trying to get decisive help for her severe endometriosis.   Oh, and a nice phone call from Pat from Moonachie, too.   If you’d like to help Pat and Big A pay for their medical expenses while we wait for the government to come up with a safety net for the “working poor”, check out the post below.

We’re now on every other Saturday night at 5pm Eastern.   This is our new spot until SiriusXM decides to change it again.   As always we appreciate the tons of support we get for this show.   You all are truly great.

your pal,

Steve
